Holland Grace always had one dream: to use the money his grandmother left him to build a boarding school/treatment facility for teens dealing with depression and drug addiction. Holland quickly brought that dream to reality after his niece and charge Blakely's near suicide attempt, which cost Blakely her reputation and her senior year. After obtaining the necessary permits and permissions, Holland bought a few acres of land in the countryside and built on that homely patch of land Salvation Academic and Mental Health Institute, Salvation Academy or sometimes Sal Cad for short, and outfitted it with the finest educators, counselors, and psychiatrist he could find. Day hours in Sal Cad were mostly like any normal school, but the evenings are filled with counselor's appointments and group sessions.
Sal Cad opened on August tenth. Holland's opening statement was directed more toward the students than to the prestigious men present responsible for the facility's existence. Holland's voice was low and serious as he spoke.
"'It's all in your head.' That's so many people's response to depression and addiction. And that's true. But what so many don't understand is that it being a mental issue is why mental illness is so difficult to live with, let alone cure. It requires changing the way you think, the way you live, the friends you chose to spend time with, and, at times, your entire self. But difficulty is no excuse for surrender."
Holland was facing his own difficulties. Running a high school is difficult enough, not to mention his doubled as a mental institution. Also, as fifteen years as a psych nurse didn't qualify Holland in education, he had to hire a co-administrator who was. He hired Darla Justice because of her strong work ethic (and because he had a thing for the ladies), but soon found that she didn't share his sympathy for the students, nor felt that Holland and Blakely's friendship was healthy for Blakely's growth. She believed in a stricter, less trusting approach to child rearing.
High school will never be the same.
