Li Bo’s eyes peered across a barren stretch of snow-covered wilderness. It would probably be a long night. His eyes scanned the heavens and this unusual sky. The moon lay in nearly two dozen fragments across the horizon, intersected by blinking stars. “To the song I sing the moon flickers her beams, indeed.”, he muttered to himself. The sage of the Tang walked across a frozen pond and began to climb a tree of pine. It was a game of cat and mouse between his compatriots and their rivals. It was for sport of course, not for blood. Li Bo could not have stomached such a chase if it had been true. While moving across the thistles of the big green tree Li Bo spied his teammate. “Athos! Athos!”, called the poet, “Come up and sit upon this tree.”
The count of la Fère peered skyward. “Silence yourself!”, Athos called out in that loud pseudo-whisper often employed to balance stealth and anger. “Do you want us to get captured?” The man wore a black hat the slanted over his left ear. His was a light blue jacket and pants. While he was dressed for winter, the man maintained a stylized cross on his right breast. Athos drew his rapier as his eyes darted between Li Bo, clad in a red and black zhiju, and the surrounding area.
Suddenly, the worst fears of the Frenchmen were realized, the pine itself warped and bent. Its wood and pines soon wrapped around Li Bo, forming a sort of cage. It was the work of Kaguna, she called herself a druid but all that really meant is that she used sorcery to manipulate flora. “Yes,” Athos said aloud in the tongue of the Sun King, “It would probably be a long night.”
Welcome to Homeline, an RPG based on GURPS: Infinite Worlds. Our story begins thirty years ago, in 1997, when Dr. Paul Van Zandt discovered the secret to dimensional travel. He found other worlds. Each of these other worlds follow the "for want of a nail" rule: each was changed from the world as we know it by a single event in history. On some worlds these changes are subtle, such as Madison being on the nickel. Other worlds have more drastic changes, such as having sentient lizards being the dominant species of Earth.
The technology for time travel is controlled by Van Zandt in the form of a corporation known as Infinity Inc. which is chartered by the UN and of which, Van Zandt is CEO. Economic interest in the various worlds is regulated by a trade corporation called White Star, under the Infinity umbrella. Whereas defensive work across the multiverse is done by Infinity Patrol, a paramilitary organization, or I-SWAT for very select missions.
Along the way, Homeline discovered another group of dimension travelers known as Centrum. Centrum are paranoid collectivist technocrats with a ruthless streak and a passion for a monolithic culture who believe that Secundus, their word for Homeline, is a dangerous threat to stability. The two sides have been fighting a cold war since their first contact.
In time headaches other then Centrum revealed themselves. Reich-5, a world ruled by Nazis, seems to get closer to full-blown dimensional travel by the hour. The Cabal, a secretive organization of mages with mysterious and ever-shifting goals appeared on the scene as well. Not to mention firefights with Aztecs, sentient plagues that threaten entire quanta and good old-fashioned bureaucratic red tape.
