actives
original character positions are listed in this thread. once they are taken, there are no more. names are not negotiable.
Actives, also known as dolls, are the employees and merchandise of Dollhouses. All of them volunteered for a five-year contract, during which time their memories are wiped and they are imprinted with different personalities according to the needs of the Dollhouse's clientele. The Los Angeles Dollhouse is the only one still in operation, but it has no clients anymore; the dolls are slowly being returned to their original personalities to help with the resistance, or imprinted with skills that will be useful at that time. The actives are named after the NATO phonetic alphabet and exist mainly in a child-like state, although they are being allowed to become more self-aware now; they're more useful when they're not "empty".

Now, there have been no new employees for years; fearing that Rossum would try and infiltrate her Dollhouse when the first waves of wiping started happening, Adele DeWitt cut her Dollhouse off. Everybody who works here has done so for a long while; some of them ended up here because there was nowhere else that would accommodate their morals (or lack thereof), or because they were interested in the science behind imprinting, or simply because they wanted to make sure that the actives were looked after well. actuals
one actual character per member - there are no maximum positions. please note that being an actual doesn't automatically make your character a resistance fighter; you need to sign up for that separately.
Actuals are people who haven't been imprinted or had their minds wiped - they are still in possession of their own personalities. They can be distinguished from false imprints by their 'birthmarks' - tattoos of their own names on their backs; real Actuals' names will match up, while imprinted Butchers' are unlikely to. The Actuals are on the run, fearing all technology and fighting to survive. They have set up a base camp in an abandoned motel in Los Angeles, and their number is increasing everyday. Of this number, many have formed a resistance to fight Rossum and its mass-imprints. The Actuals are seeking out the Dollhouse, having heard rumours that signals don't work there and that there is another resistance working from inside it. They hope that with finding it, they will also find a cure.

butchers

Butchers are former actives from the Dollhouses across the globe (excluding the LA branch) who have been imprinted with the personality of a killer; they are Rossum's personal army, and their mission is to kill anyone who hasn't had their mind wiped or been imprinted with another personality. Most are ruthless killers, travelling to towns simply to wipe out Actuals, but there are a few who have been designated as undercover agents, whose mission it is to infiltrate Actual camps and take them down from the inside. Butchers have no conscience and no moral compass; they are nothing but killers.

These people are unlikely to have much of a conscience; they are the ones who have taken the technology from the Dollhouses and made it so that mass-imprints are possible; they are ruling the world and creating themselves an army. Not all of them are aware of what they are doing; there are many people among Rossum's ranks who are dolls, imprinted with a personality that isn't theirs, but those who are themselves have made a choice. They are currently developing more ways to imprint more of the population and take down the Actual resistance bands.
